Personal Reflection: Quotable quotes from our pope

In the few months that Pope Francis has been the leader of our church, he has wowed us time and again with his simple, yet profound, words. When he talks, we listen with our hearts because he speaks with simplicity and love.

Here are a few of my favorite quotes from the last couple of weeks.

At Pentecost, Pope Francis said only the Holy Spirit can bring unity in this beautiful quote: "The Holy Spirit would appear to create disorder in the church, since he brings the diversity of charisms and gifts; yet all this, by his working, is a great source of wealth, for the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of unity, which does not mean uniformity, but which leads everything back to harmony... "

And at his general audience on May 15, he encouraged us to pray to the Holy Spirit: "This is a prayer that we need to say every day: ‘Holy Spirit, make my heart open to God’s Word so that my heart might be open to good, so that my heart might be open to God’s beauty every day.’"

Here is a good one about forgiveness:

"We are all sinners … The problem isn’t being a sinner. The problem is not repenting of our sins, not being ashamed of what we have done. That’s the problem … He always seeks us out; he always is near to us. But many times we look the other way because we don’t want to talk with the Lord or encounter him," said Pope Francis on May 17 during the homily at a Mass in the chapel of the Domus Sanctae Marthae.

The pope recalled Mary’s visit to her cousin Elizabeth, as she "set out in haste" to be with her loved one. "It’s beautiful to think this about the Virgin, our Mother, who sets out in haste because she has this within her: helping ... She went to help! And Our Lady is always like that. She is our Mother, who always comes in haste when we need help ... And when her children are in difficulty, when they are in need and call upon her, she sets out in haste. And this gives us a security, the certainty of always having our mother near, always at our side … Our Lady who always comes for us quickly."

And here is my favorite thus far:

"Jesus. What is the most important thing? Jesus. If we push ahead with planning and organization, beautiful things indeed, but without Jesus, then we are on the wrong road. Jesus is the most important thing. I would like to take the opportunity now to make a small, but fraternal, reproach, among ourselves, alright? All of you in the square shouted out: ‘Francis, Francis, Pope Francis’ ... But, where was Jesus? I want to hear you shot out, "Jesus, Jesus is Lord, and He is in our midst.’ From now on, no more ‘Francis,’ only ‘Jesus.’ Alright?" This particular quote is one of my favorites.

I love that he is so humble and even a little playful! May God bless Pope Francis. I look forward to many more quotes of wisdom and love from him.
