Job Description: 

The part time music director is a new position of the University Catholic Center and will be responsible for enhancing the Sunday liturgical worship experience of the community through music. The music director will create and direct a community choir at one mass for every Sunday of the UT academic school year. In addition, the director will be present at one additional mass every Sunday of the year, semester breaks included, to coordinate or serve as accompanist. The music director will select, arrange, and coordinate the music for the liturgy of each Sunday and Holy Day throughout the year, including Easter, Christmas, and other major celebrations.


• Select and arrange music for each Sunday and Holy Day
• Coordinate music leader of each of the 4 masses on Sundays and Holy Days
• Create and direct a Sunday Choir to sing at one selected Mass every Sunday and selected Holy Day Masses
• Coordinate and supervise hired cantors or instrumentalists as needed
• Conduct a weekday rehearsal for the choir and instrumentalists
• Meet regularly with the clergy staff for planning
• Oversee maintenance of musical equipment and instruments
• Maintain organization system for music selections of the Center
• Rotate through the Sunday masses that the choir is not at and provide vocal or instrumental accompaniment at the mass and assist at the rehearsal before mass
• Serve as musician contact for the occasional marriages and funerals at the Center. (Separate stipend for playing/directing at marriages)
• Maintain a work schedule that usually does not exceed 20 hours/ week

Minimum Qualifications: 

• Undergraduate degree in music with specialty in conducting, voice, or keyboard accompaniment
• Must have strong communication and leadership skills
• Must be able to work collaboratively with a variety of staff and volunteers with different skill levels
• Must be computer proficient
• Willingness to work flexible hours including some evenings
• Desire for ongoing professional development
• Must successfully complete the Ethics and Integrity in Ministry program of the Austin Diocese and pass a background check
• Prior experience of leadership in liturgical music preferred
