Vocation Office

Through the sacrament of Baptism, each person receives his or her “vocation,” a call from God to be holy and to serve Him. This call to holiness and service is lived in the single state (in certain cases), in married life, as an ordained man, or as a consecrated person.

The Office of Vocations promotes the universal call to holiness of all Christians and highlights the unique calls to priesthood and the religious life.

Father Jonathan Raia, Vocation Director, recruits, counsels and assists seminarians during their formation to the priesthood. The office also offers programs and retreats for men and women who are interested in discerning a call to the priesthood or religious life. Finally, the office works to foster a “vocation culture” throughout the Diocese.

Meet our Vocation Director

Fr. Jonathan Raia, a native of Houston, was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Austin in 2009.  The seeds of his priestly vocation were planted by his parents’ faith in Jesus Christ and the example of holiness he witnessed in the priests at his parish.  Growing up, he grew in friendship with the Lord and love of the Church through Catholic school, altar serving, the parish youth group, and retreat ministry in both high school and college.  He felt the call to priesthood more strongly while a student at the University of Texas at Austin, where he graduated with a B.A. in Liberal Arts and Spanish in 2002.  Through his involvement at the University Catholic Center, as well as his work as an intern at the Diocese of Austin and the guidance of then-Bishop Gregory Aymond, he felt called to serve as a priest in the Diocese of Austin.  Fr. Jonathan served four years as parochial vicar at St. William Parish in Round Rock, then for a year as parochial vicar at St. Mary’s Catholic Center at Texas A&M University, before beginning as Vocation Director for the Diocese of Austin in July 2014.  He holds a Master’s degree in Christian Spirituality from Creighton University, where he also received training in spiritual direction.  He serves as a spiritual director and adjunct faculty member for the Institute for Priestly Formation and also has served on the Institute for Spiritual Direction, which trains lay spiritual directors for the Diocese of Austin.
