This weekend, the last Sunday of each liturgical year, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ. This celebration of Christ the King, instituted by Pope Pius XI in 1925 in response to growing secularism and atheism, encourages us to celebrate and live out our faith in the public square. As we celebrate this feast, we are united in declaring to the world that Jesus is Lord and King of the Universe. As citizens of Christ’s kingdom, we are called to take our rightful place in his creation and see all things through the lens of the Gospel. We do this through the faithful celebration of the sacraments and apostolic action in the world.
This week the bishops of the United States met for their annual general assembly; this was the first in-person meeting in two years. We continued to pray, discern and reflect upon the preeminent mystery of our Catholic faith – the Holy Eucharist.
