AUSTIN – Most Rev. Joe S. Vásquez, Bishop of the Diocese of Austin, issued the following statement on Jan. 10:
“I am deeply saddened by Gov. Greg Abbott’s decision to block Texas from participating in the federal refugee settlement program. Along with my brother bishops of Texas, I respect the governor. Unfortunately, this decision denies people fleeing religious and political persecution the opportunity to bring their gifts and talents to our state and contribute to the common good.
Over the years, Texas has received millions of federal dollars to participate in this effective program, which provides assistance to children and families forced out of their homeland who now legally seek refuge in this country. Surprisingly, Gov. Abbott suggests these refugees seek assistance in other states before coming to Texas. More than 40 governors have already consented to this program. This leaves me at a loss to understand his unwillingness to assist these people at a most desperate time.
Having just celebrated Christmas, we are mindful that the Holy Family were refugees. As Christians, a cornerstone of our faith is to welcome and care for the stranger, which has made our country great.
I ask that we all commit ourselves even more ardently to work with people of good will, including our federal, state and local governments, in helping refugees integrate into our communities. I offer my prayers for refugees who will suffer from this decision.”
