Bishop Emeritus John E. McCarthy, the third bishop of the Diocese of Austin, died Aug. 18 at the age of 88. A priest for more than 62 years, Bishop McCarthy was a “true son of the church,” said Bishop Joe Vásquez during the Vigil Service on Aug. 23 at St. William Parish in Round Rock. “He was a man filled with joy, even at the end of his life when he was suffering greatly,” Bishop Vásquez said. “He embraced the joy that comes from living a full life with Jesus and with others.”
