Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost has been elected the 267th pope of the Roman Catholic Church and has taken the name Leo XIV.
Brief bio from Vatican News "The first Augustinian Pope, Leo XIV is the second Roman Pontiff - after Pope Francis - from the Americas. Unlike Jorge Mario Bergoglio, however, the 69-year-old Robert Francis Prevost is from the northern part of the continent, though he spent many years as a missionary in Peru before being elected head of the Augustinians for two consecutive terms."
- Very Reverend James A. Misko, Diocesan Administrator
Our hearts are filled with joy and gratitude for our new Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV. In God’s good providence and with the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the Cardinals have provided the Church with a new shepherd. We ask God to fill him with grace and wisdom to sanctify the Church in unity, teach with truth and mercy, and lead us to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ by our lives.
Good and gracious God, the faithful of the Diocese of Austin rejoice with profound gratitude that, in your good providence, Pope Leo XIV has been elected as the Successor of St. Peter. Fill him with your grace and give him a heart after the heart of the Good Shepherd, Jesus. May he be guided by the Holy Spirit to sanctify the Church in unity, teach with truth and mercy, and lead us to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ by our lives. Recognizing our closeness with Pope Leo XIV, inspire him to send this local Church a new shepherd who will please you by his holiness and accompany us with loving care. Invoking the intercession of our patroness, Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, we pray through Christ the Risen Lord, Amen.
